The Sydney Fish Markets are set for a massive $250 million redevelopment and a slight change of location, set to begin at the end of next year.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian told the Sydney Morning Herald: "The Sydney Fish Market is an iconic part of our city but there's no doubt it needs a huge makeover. I know, with a makeover, there will be even more tourists and even more locals enjoying this." It will find a new home in Blackwattle Bay after standing in its current spot in Bays Market District since 1966. The new and old spots are adjacent, so locals need not fret. The Bay will also receive new restaurants, cafes and bars, a public boardwalk, and will be potentially light rail and ferry accessible. The current spot will be replaced by high-rise residential developments.

The beautification of the markets is set to be left in the hands of 3xn, a Danish architect firm who have built internationally-renown waterfront buildings including the Denmark National Aquarium and Sydney's Quay Quarter Tower, according to Broadsheet. The new markets are expected to allow room for visitors to watch the live auctions, as well as providing them with opportunities to learn about sustainability and how their fish have been caught. There will also be more cooking classes, training and education in the new and improved Sydney Seafood School.

Peter Manettas from our favourite online seafood delivery service EVER told Broadsheet: “[The new market] will allow the industry to start developing into the future, for too long it has been stuck in the past. What we would like to see is long-term growth, more jobs coming to Australia, and the spotlight on the industry internationally, not only as a tourist destination, but as a trading facility across the globe.”

The development is projected to increase the market's annual visitors from 3 million to around 6 million. General Manager Bryan Skepper told the SMH that the coming development will be "the world's best fish market". We're expecting big things! It will begin construction in 2018 and is projected to be finished in 2020 or 2021.
