Sydney❜s Best Local Family Yum Cha

Here in Sydney, our little ones have an amazing array of multicultural culinary adventures at their fingertips and our favourite introduction is Yum Cha. Wherever you live, you really are spoiled for choice, and every family is sure to have their favourite joint. What’s more is that kids are more than welcome – and there’s always enough hustle and bustle to drown out any tantrums if you have a toddler with you.

ellaslist tip: most of these places take bookings especially if you have a large crew with you. So if you don’t want to wait in the mile long Sunday line, give them a buzz for a reservation. Here are our picks for Sydney’s Best Yum Cha for kids:

 

SYDNEY CBD

Fisherman’s Wharf Seafood Restaurant, Pyrmont: This is our family favourite. Never too huge a crowd, huge fish tanks for the kids to peer into and not surprisingly, fabulous seafood dishes among the traditional fare!

The Eight, Haymarket: An aircraft hanger of a dining hall with 750 seats and an enormous variety of dumpling dishes. Excellent for groups of families to meet up. You still have to get here early if you don’t want to wait.

Marigold Haymarket: The Marigold is one of Sydney’s very first Yum Cha restaurants and still one of the very best. It’s busy which means there is a high turnover rate of carts so everything is always fresh and hot. And they love children! Just be prepared to wait if you arrive after 10am.

Bodhi, Sydney CBD: We love this Vegan Yum Cha spot – it’s right next to the Cook and Phillip Park Aquatic Centre, so great for an after swim snack and has outdoor tables.

 

 EASTERN SUBURBS

Imperial Peking, Souths Jr Kingsford: Daily yum cha, lots of room and unusually, for a Chinese restaurant, great big windows with panoramic views.

Zilver Westfield, Bondi Junction is huge and brand new, but expect queues – if they are too long, nip over to the Easts Leagues club instead. Or try the new contemporary China Diner on Bondi Beach.

Golden Unicorn, Maroubra: Great variety and the queues are relatively short.

NORTH SHORE

Star Capital Seafood, Chatswood: Avoid the queue and book online here.

 

INNER WEST

Phoenix Restaurant, Rhodes Shopping Centre: There are plenty of high chairs and lots of rooms and the handy shopping centre location means there is loads of parking. And it’s a great reward for surviving a trip to Ikea!

Crystal Seafood, Strathfield: Cheap and tasty, this yum cha joint serves up great versions of all the classics.

NORTH WEST

Grand Lotus, Rouse Hill: Great food, friendly service, plenty of parking and the staff always make a special effort to keep the kids happy. Another great local.

Fortune Palace, Carlingford: A great local but super busy on weekends – we recommend booking if you don’t want to spend the morning in a queue. 

WESTERN SUBURBS

Dynasty Chinese, Belmore: This Chinese oasis, set in the enormous Canterbury Leagues Club often gets voted the best Yum Cha in Sydney, so be prepared to wait. Once you’re in, though, sit back and relax. Lots of space for kids and plenty of interesting things to look at.

Iron Chef, Cabramatta: If you love dumplings, this is the best in the west. They also offer Peking duck pancakes during yum cha-sensational!

 

ST GEORGE/SOUTH SYDNEY

Crown Dragon, Kogarah: Great yum cha at the St George Leagues Club.
