Things To Do In Sydney: Walks With Kids Aged 6 Months To 6 years +

Let’s get rid of some of our dreaded cabin fever by stretching our legs in the great outdoors. We’ve put together a list of our favourite lesser-known walks with Kids (6mths to 6yrs+) around Sydney. Some are pram friendly, others are not, so lets just assume you’ve put the littlest member of your family in a carrier or macpac.

And if you would enjoy some company with like minded Parents/Carers on these walks, Hike is Baby (Sydney branch) is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting families to nature.

Manly Dam

This is a family favourite of ours. There are a few different walks you can take here, including one to see Aboriginal paintings and engravings. There are also BBQ facilities, playground, water sports, fishing, picnic, swimming etc. Lots of on site parking and keep an eye out for wildlife.

Pram Friendly: Not really / best with carrier.

The Goods Line

A hidden gem amongst busy city life. Jump off at Central Station and begin the walk from Devonshire Street tunnel. Exit Central station at South Concourse where the Devonshire Street Tunnel starts. Walk through the tunnel all the way to Railway Square where you need to continue into the second part of the tunnel. This will then soon flow into The Goods Line where you’ll see the old train track and also a yellow UTS sign. OK, this one isn’t in nature and its really only about 500m long but that’s a lot of walking for little legs! Plus there is a terrific water play area for kids and The Powerhouse Museum (and its café/play ground) is at the very end.

Carrs Bush Park

Located in the foreshore of Kogarah Bay, this wonderful parkland has a brand new playground that caters for all ages and abilities, a cafe, shark nets for safe swimming, walking tracks, bbqs and tables.

Beautiful place for a picnic, a walk and some history lessons.

Pram Friendly: For the most part yes but its an older track so I’d use the carrier if possible.

Glebe Foreshore Walk

Best part of this walking track is the food at either end. You could start at either the newly opened Tramsheds in Forest Lodge or near the Fish Markets at Blackwattle Bay. It’s approx. 2.4km walk and is paved the whole way.

Pram Friendly: yes.

Myles Dunphy Reserve

A delightful bush walk that's both beautiful and easy to do. Such a great walk to do with young kids too. Enjoy the vegetation as its home to some threatened wildlife and plant communities. The reserve & wetlands are one of the most significant nature areas in the Hurstville local government area which is why so many locals are passionate about protecting/preserving it. 

Pram Friendly: No.

Nepean River Walk

It's a 7km track complete with numerous playgrounds, spectacular scenery, various walking/bike/scootering paths, river swings, multiple toilet blocks, BBQ's and a cafe inside an old ferry. No need to do it all (unless you want too of course). Park in one of the many convenient parking bays along the way and walk as much or as little as you’d like.

Narrabeen Lakes Walk

This is an 8.4km circuit walk so again, you can always decide to just do a little segment at a time, especially if your little ones are walking themselves. So much to see and do along the way. Great eateries, playgrounds and marine life. Perhaps even do a spot of fishing?

Pram friendly: Sometimes.

Como Bridge

A local favourite. The kids can run, scooter or bike along side you on this 1.5km walkway over a 100 year old bridge. A welcome stop at the end of the Oatley-Como walk is the Como Marina. You will enjoy a nice lunch here at the cafe whilst taking in all the transportation in sight: trains, boats, planes, scooters and cars. There is also a park with play equipment and of course, the famous pub nearby.

Pram friendly: Yes

Address: Best to park in Myra Place Oatley to start the walk.
