Where is the best place to see whales in Sydney? Find the best whale watching spots & cruises!

The whale-watching season along NSW’s east coast runs from May to November and the best times to spot them are early morning or late afternoon. If you want to take your chances spotting one on your own, choose a nice and calm day, make sure you bring binoculars and head to one of these vantage points (some of these are unsuitable for pram access so best for little walkers or babes in packs):

Cape Solander in Kamay Botany Bay National Park (SOUTH) has a viewing platform and is known as one of the best whale-watching locations in Sydney. Friendly volunteers are there to provide information throughout the season.

South Head, Sydney Harbour National Park (EAST) is famous for its sandstone cliffs, historic fortifications and scenic walks. It’s also a great spot to see the whales.

North Head Lookout, North Head National Park (NTHN BEACHES) gives you a great view of these awesome marine mammals. Plus, it offers spectacular views of Sydney’s skyline.

Long Reef Point (NTHN BEACHES) is located on a headland with an extended protruding reef that’s a protected aquatic reserve. It’s well known to local whale watchers as a hotspot.

You can also try your luck around Clovelly Beach, along the Bondi to Bronte walk, Magic Point at Maroubra, the Palm Beach Lighthouse on Barrenjoey Headland and Bangally Headland in Avalon. Check the National Parks Whale Watching website for more vantage points around Sydney.
